We loved our calmbirth experience!
Doing the calmbirth program with Dianne was a wonderful experience for us to do together as the start of our new family.
It was also great to do it so early in the pregnancy (20 weeks) as it really gave lots of time for practice leading up to the birth. I would do the visualisations on the train to and from work and it was a great way to relax and rejuvinate both after a long day or in preparation for the day. Gabrielle was so responsive when I would do the visualisations and it was often a time when she would kick and move, almost as if she was participating as well.
Unfortunately I was diagnosed with placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix) which meant I was not allowed to have a vaginal birth and had to have a planned cesearean section. I found though that what I had learnt through the calmbirth program was just as helpful in this context (maybe even more so). Being surrounded by a room full of surgeons / doctors was quite overwhelming and being able to do some visualisations really helped.
Gabi is such a calm and placid baby. She just goes with the flow and we wonder if starting her life with the calmbirth program has actually assisted with that. In the early days when she was unsettled we would do some calmbirth breathing with her in our arms and it would calm her down - quite amazing.
We would highly recommend the calmbirth program and Dianne was a fantastic practioner. We will definitely use the calmbirth principles in any future pregnancy. In fact we still enjoy the benefits of the relaxation techniques in our everyday life.
I was attracted to the calmbirth due my anxiety of hospitals and also the fear and pain of child birth. After completing the calmbirth training, I routinely used the CDs and found myself feeling more at ease about child birth and had a different perspective to it. Rather then seeing it as a time of fear I embraced it as a wonderful experience to birth our baby into the world.
As this was our first baby, I was very unsure of what to expect and had taken on many unpleasant and horror stories from others, and I was worried that these would cloud my judgement and make it hard for me to use the calmbirth technique. However, the birth of our son was a very memorable and uplifting experience.
The birth went very quickly with minimal pain, only using gas throughout the birthing experience. I had no complications and was told by my midwife and Obstetrician that I remained very focused and composed, and they in fact were very proud of the way I approached it.
I truly believe the calmbirth played a very significant role in the whole birthing process for my husband and I and would defiantly use those skills again when having future children.
To tell you the truth when I first heard about calmbirth I was a bit sceptical, I didn’t think it would work. The reason why I didn’t think it would work was because all I would hear about was my friend’s labour experiences and how painful the labour was and how the husbands don’t really have a place in the birthing suite. Well after doing the calmbirth program and giving birth to two beautiful children using this technique, I am amazed that more people haven’t tried it and made their birthing experience a peaceful, painless and empowering one.
My birthing experience with Noah was 24 hours of labour without drugs using the calmbirth technique. Even though 24 hours seems long when I was in the middle of it, it seems like no time at all. However after the 24 hour period the midwives saw my son was distressed so they had to get him out. I had a Caesarean and with that had a spinal block.

My birthing experience with Bella was very different to Noah, First we went straight for the caesarean, but I still used the calmbirth technique during the whole process. Bella got stuck when they were trying to push her down, she was coming out face first and her neck kept on going backwards. So the doctors had to cut me up the right abdominal wall to try and get her out. There was about 15 minutes of the doctors pushing and finally using forceps to get her out. In this process my blood pressure went right down causing me to feel faint, I lost a lot of blood and the pushing on my stomach got harder and harder. If I didn’t use the calmbirth technique I would have panicked and that would not have been good for the doctors, Bella or me.
I am so grateful for the calmbirth technique and I would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to have a wonderful birthing experience.
